Album Artwork/Digipak Analysis

Chase & Status- No More Idols

File:No More Idols.jpg

  • The album art (front cover) is of a British bulldog, represents South london, England, where the duo are from, and where dubstep originated.
  • The yellow, bold font contrasts from the black and white background, to make it eye catching. This adds the feeling of caution.
  • Bulldogs are seen as 'hard' dogs, which connotes the genre is a 'hard' and 'rough' genre. As it's dubstep which makes audience's go crazy.

  • The tracklist/ back cover also has the colour theme of black and yellow.  To make it easy to read, and that the audience should handle with care.
  • On the side, 'No more idols' and 'chase and status' are in yellow, which contrasts against the black, so from the side of the CD cover, it is still eye catching.

  • The CD also has the black and yellow colour theme

  • The inside image is of the duo, Chase and Status to show what they look like. They placed it where the CD will be placed.

Example- Playing in the shadows

File:PlayingintheShadows.jpg

  • Example's artwork goes along with the title of his album (playing in the shadows) as one half of him is in the light, whilst the other is in a shadowy form. This also connotes he is good, but has a dark side to him.
  • Black and white is his general colour theme. But to contrast, he has a yellow box around his name to make it attractive to the audience.

  • His CD is mainly yellow with a black outline. The yellow part is the 'e' for Example, which is his logo.
  • It has the album name on it in black contrasting against the yellow background.

  • His logo is in white, contrasting with the black.
  • 'Playing in the shadows' is in yellow to stand out.
  • His track list is not in the form they usually are. They are usually a list going down, but his is in a list going left to right.
  • Barcode at the bottom.
  • The side of the the CD cover is in yellow and black, so from the side it still catches your eye.

Last One Standing (Doctor P Remix) - Example LYRICS

We're on the run
And I'm about to lose it
She's like a gun
And she ain't afraid to use it

Come on, we'll catch our very last train
Light our very last flames
And we'll knock it all back
And forget our names
'Cause it's our last night
And it's one last fight
We're the last ones
The last ones standing [x5]

Come on, we'll catch our very last train
Light our very last flames
And we'll knock it all back
And forget our names
'Cause it's our last night
And it's one last fight
We're the last ones
The last ones standing [x3]

This ain't child's play like pass the parcel
Or build a castle, just a couple of rascals
Who go harder, live faster
Fight 'till the end like Jason's Argonauts
Uh, 'cause life's a carnival
There's no reason, motives marginal
Don't care if we're cold and starving
We'll still be laughing when

We're on the run
And I'm about to lose it
She's like a gun
And she ain't afraid to use it

Come on, we'll catch our very last train
Light our very last flames
And we'll knock it all back
And forget our names
'Cause it's our last night
And it's one last fight
We're the last ones
The last ones standing [x5]

Come on, we'll catch our very last train
Light our very last flames
And we'll knock it all back
And forget our names
'Cause it's our last night
And it's one last fight
We're the last ones
The last ones standing [x3]

Last night we both died a death
Just flowed 'till no cider left
Jumped out the wrong side of bed
Now another night of wrong lies ahead
To be a kid again, Nancy and Sid again
Need medicine, cut out the middle men
Run free, only way to get rid of them
Never gonna catch us

We're on the run
And I'm about to lose it
She's like a gun
And she ain't afraid to use it

Andrew Godwin's theory on music videos

Borgore- Foes (16bit remix)

    1. 1. Dubstep music videos are unique in their style, and do not take themselves too seriously. They usually have a narrative rather than people performing the music in them, which is unlike usual music videos for genres such as: Rock, Hip-hop, etc. The music focuses on the audience enjoying the music, therefore the video's have a narrative rather than the performer.
    2. They do not link the lyrics to the video exactly, they focus more on the visuals

    3. The visuals go along with the bass of the song, they edit in time with the beat and make it more stylised rather than a band or artist just singing. They focus on fashion and outrageous clothing, such as gold shoes.

    4. Most dubstep is created by one artist or a duo, and rarely have a production company. So they do not feel the need to put the artist in as the music is about big bass, not words or a singer, and is made for clubs/parties therefore rarely features the artist.

    5. Some dubstep music videos do feature voyeuristic images, like the picture at the top, but not like gangster rap videos where the man has a lot of unclothed girls around/on him. The girls are more dominant and not all over a man. They feature a lot of weird and unique characters/ people.

    Chris Cunningham- Music Video Music

    Chris Cunningham
Chris Cunningham is an English music video film director/auteur and video artist. He was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1970 and grew up in Lakenheath, Suffolk.

    Style
His style is art-house with a horror element, all his videos are very surreal. He has a knack for the extraordinary. For example in The Aphex Twins- Come To Daddy, he has little school girls, around the age of 8 running around then the camera shows all the girls having the same mans face, which messes with your mind. On the other hand

    What influenced him?
In 'come to daddy' by the Aphex Twins, he features a bunch of school girls with the same MANS face. When asked "What made you come up with the idea?"
He replied "I remembered being chased through the woods by a nine-year- old child when i was about 16. I was on a pushbike and he had a hammer. It was humiliating and i was shitting it. At 16 you don't want to end up being pulverised by a nine- year- old in case of and girls watching! Also, Richard was using children's voices in his tracks at the time and using his face on all his covers. It was a combination of all that
Also in that music video, he used about 2 children, and the rest were all midget adults. "That's one of my favourite things about the video. Little hairy-armed kids"- Chris Cunningham.
( I found this in the DVD of 'the work of director Chris Cunningham)

What runs through all his videos?
In all of his videos surrealism runs through them. Also they are very enigmatic, as you never know what, and why things are heppening.

On the other hand he has made more aesthetically dynamic music videos, for example his video for Bjork's- all is full of love
which has an intertextual reference to i-Robot:

    Other work
On the other hand, Chris Cunningham doesn't just do music videos, he also creates short films, commecials, and photography. Here is a video to his playsation advert:

    Star Analysis- Example

Example is a Singer, songwriter, and rapper.
Example released his own single "I Don't Want To" from his own label "All The Chats" in 2006, while persuing his ambition to be an editor at Royal Holloway University.

    Fashion/Visual Look
His look is stylish street, usually jeans with a logoed top and colourful hoodie/jacket. His look is contempary. His look is very high profile look, compared to Lady gaga, he doesn't rely on his look to get him noticed.

    Genre
Electro house, Rap, Dubstep, Hip-Hop, Grime. He usually combines all those genres to create a new sound.

    Media Representation
Example doesn't get in the tabloids as much as many other artists, but he has been contriversial on twitter usually having a strong opinion on other musicians, such as: He was celebrating his birthday when he jokingly tweeted, “29 is my real age by the way. My PR age is 24. Everyone has a different age for the media. Alexandra Burke is actually 41.” Alexandra did not take kindly to the tweet and sent a number of tweets to the rapper.

This caused Example to have a dig at the girls saying, “can we all just sit down together and just be friends. I'll write you some good songs.” Adding to Rochelle (The Saturdays), “my arena tour is next april, I need some miming dancers, you free?” Ouch!
