Technical Analysis- MASSS - The catalyst (Linkin park DUBSTEP Remix)

I am analysing MASSS' music video of their remix of Linkin Park- The Catalyst

Cinematography
This music video is all done through POV style. It is filmed from the POV of the gun. The first shot is an establishing shot of the room the gun is in. In the second, it is filmed from a low-angle, looking up at the man holding the gun. All the shots are tracking shots, of either the protagonist walking, driving, or on a skateboard. These shots are very experimental as you're following the gun, rather than the man, which is like the gun is the protagonist. The tracking shots while in the care are from a low angle driving along the road passing other parked cars.

Mise-en-scene
it's set in a rural area, such as South/East London. This supplements the realism as there no costumes. There is a time lapse of the city from day to night, which shows the light of day then the darkness of the night. In the shot where the man is holding the gun up, the light flashes from black and white to blue.

Editing
The editing is very fast passed, especially when the bass drops. Also its twitchy, which flows with the beat of the song. They use fast cuts to cut into the next shop, rather than fades and other transitions. They sped up the camera work to allow more to happen in the video.

Genre Research

Dubstep  is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in south London, England. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals"

The earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998 and were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks.

Dubstep's rhythms are usually shuffled. It doesn't follow the common patterns in other styles of electronic dance music. It relies of longer percussion loops. Dubstep features the wobble bass.

2009-present is when dubstep has become mainstream, particularly in the UK. The US are fast becoming dubtep followers as well.
It is compilation of many popular underground genres, such as garage musical contemporary rap, UK rock, electro and house. It takes into account various conventions of some of the best genres of music which enables Dubstep to become so versatile so that it can be incorporated with all most any type of music. This is one of the reasons as to why Dubstep has become popular amongst so many different social groups based on their musical preferences, people that are into heavy metal, electro, grime and house music which all greatly differentiate from one another, all have Dubstep as a common genre preference in their music choice. The relationship between the lyrics and music is different to other genres, not due to the music overpowering the lyrics, but the music having the same effect in the track as the lyrics would, meaning that people that love good music, listen to the lyrics for example the lyrics from Bob Dylan. But with dubstep, the music has meaning as well, as it makes you feel as if adrenaline is passing through you whilst you listen.
